Tips On Choosing The Right Chain To Add Your Own Pendant

Adding your own pendant on a chain is not very complicated, but there are some important things to consider! When it comes to adding your own pendant on a chain, the best chain style or width largely depends on your personal preference and the type of pendant you want to add. In this article, we will give you tips on how to choose the right chain width, chain style and more. We will also provide you with the best chains to use from our store to ensure your pendant looks its best.

1. Consider the chain width

The first thing to understand is that, unless you are able to use tools to open the jump ring that holds your pendant, you will need to find a chain that is small enough to fit through the ring/hole of your pendant. The size of these vary a lot, some can only fit on very dainty chains, and others can easily be added on chunkier chains. If the piece that holds your pendant is more of a hook style, it will generally be wider and easier to find a chain that fits your needs.

2. Consider the size of the opening of your pendant

Once you have measured the jump ring that holds your pendant, or whatever holds your pendant, you will be able to know what you are looking for in terms of chain thickness. However, keep in mind that most chains use a closing jump ring that will be bigger than the chain’s thickness. If you cannot find this information on the listing, you can message the store owner(s) for this information. In our store, we generally use a closing jump ring that is approximately 2-3mm larger than the chain width. For example, if our chain is 3mm thick, the closing jump ring might be approximately 5mm or 6mm. If you need it to be smaller, you can message us and we will be happy to accomodate the size that you need whenever it's possible!

3. Consider the chain length

For help finding which length you should choose, you can refer to our blog article about this.

4. Consider the chain style

The chain style can be whichever one you like, but we would recommend getting a chain that is pretty simple to really let the pendant capture the attention. Here are some of our recommendations, and most popular chains that our customers like to add their own pendants to. We also use them to create our pendant necklaces.
